So you decided to skip that one psychology course in your undergraduate years? That’s ok – here’s everything you need to know if you are working to change someone’s mind.
1) Be sincere, honest and truthful: audiences can smell insincerity or manipulation a mile away. Have a conversation instead of commanding buy-in.
2) Appeal to held beliefs: not your beliefs but the beliefs of you audience.
3) Be prepared for resistance: don’t assume people are open-minded (like you). Beliefs are hard to change at the first go at it. Be prepared for what is holding your audience back and appeal to the part that your audience agrees with.
4) Base arguments on logic: argue rationally and present cold, hard facts. It is hard to reject the objective truth.
5) Make the other person feel good: establish a genuine bond by making the other person feel good, right, appreciated, understood.
When you have to change someone’s mind to adopt a new product or incorporate a new process into their day to day, the idea is that you have to make it personal and emphasize the “why” it’s important to change courses of action or attitudes. Like anything else in life, changing minds is all a game. Map out your strategic moves and surely you’ll win.
